The best VR game to date, Half-Life: Alyx, is heavily discounted for a short time. If you don’t have it, you should pick it up now.
Half-Life: Alyx was released in 2020 and was sold by Valve alongside the best VR headset at the time, the Valve Index. The story, the characters, the world, the details and most of all the perfect VR interactions made the game the flagship title for virtual reality. Until today, no other VR game has come close to this quality.
Until November 21st, the VR hit is available on Steam for around 20 dollars, a whopping two-thirds cheaper than usual. So if you haven’t picked it up yet, you should do so now.

Easily playable with Quest 3, Quest 2 or Pico 4
A Valve Index or other PC-only VR headsets are not required. If you own one of the current standalone VR headsets, such as the Quest 3, Quest 2, or Pico 4, you can play Half-Life: Alyx over a wired or Wi-Fi connection.
In my Quest 3 review, I tried Half-Life: Alyx via AirLink, the native Wi-Fi connection for Quest headsets, and it worked perfectly. The Quest 3, with its excellent pancake lenses and image clarity all the way to the edges (no more tedious searching for the sweet spot), is also ideal for PC VR applications. A Quest 2 or Pico 4 will do the job just as well. Advantage of Quest: You can also play fantastic standalone games like Assassin’s Creed Nexus.
The virtual desktop software might even provide better Wi-Fi performance for some users. However, if you don’t have a particularly good Wi-Fi connection, you can also stream via a single USB-C cable.
Where is Half-Life: Alyx 2 or a new VR headset from Valve?
As usual, Valve won’t let us see its cards. The notoriously tight-lipped Steam operator practically never talks about its plans for VR. Recently, Valve once again stated that they are of course working on VR.
Whether Valve will develop another VR game is an open question. After all, there have been rumors for a long time about a new VR headset from Valve, the standalone VR headset “Deckard”. In a job ad from late 2022, Valve wrote that it wanted to “take the next steps in VR” and “reach millions of customers worldwide”. As usual, Valve is taking its time.
